Career opportunities and pathways Students are equipped to find employment across a wide range of sectors on an international scale. Alongside solid regional knowledge of Russia, East Europe and Eurasia, students develop transferable workplace skills that are crucial to many roles such as analytical and communication skills. Career pathways include working for:

  • international agencies such as the United Nations or the European Union
  • international development
  • print and broadcast media
  • local and national government
  • non-governmental organisations (NGOs)
  • international trade
  • business and risk analysis on the region and beyond.
  • Some students choose to remain within academia and go on to pursue PhD study and teaching opportunities. Students are also at an advantage due to the language learning that forms a part of our programme. You have the opportunity to study Russian, Polish, Hungarian or Czech. This allows you to leverage your specialist language knowledge alongside your knowledge of global issues in the sector that demand this expertise. Professional development The programme sits within the Central and East European (CEES) subject, one of only two dedicated research hubs within the UK and the only one in Scotland. This ensures students are exposed to the forefront of academic research in this area. The journal Europe-Asia Studies, which is the principal academic journal in the world focusing on the history and current political, social and economic affairs of the countries of the former ‘communist bloc’ of the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and Asia, is published by Routledge on behalf of CEES. CEES excels at innovative, interdisciplinary research and offers insight into issues of global relevance through a strong regional focus and through the programme, you will learn from staff who have lived and researched in their countries of expertise. As a student of the programme, you will also benefit from proximity to the Centre for Russian, Central and East European Studies (CRCEES). CRCEES is an inter-institutional Centre of Excellence for Russian, Central and East-European Language-Based Area Studies formed by a consortium of UK universities led by staff from our CEES subject. Students will benefit from numerous opportunities to advance their research skills and subject knowledge. These include regular talks and classes by leading academics via an extensive visiting scholars programme, cross-institutional workshops and conferences. These events offer students the opportunity to network with those working in this field and understand key discussion points and learning that will help to support them through their chosen career. Students also have the opportunity to participate in international summer schools and join events with our partner universities. Hear from our alumni “I chose this programme at Glasgow due to Russian language classes, which was important to me as I wanted to improve my language skills, and I liked the other courses offered as well. The University offered different starting levels for the language classes which was really good and quite unique. I appreciated the good discussions we had during class and afterwards with the group going for coffee. I am currently doing a PhD in Russian History at Loughborough University. Doing the MSc degree at Glasgow prepared me for conducting solid academic research, and also gave me a good overview of the leading academic publications/narratives that exist in the field. I still use some of the reading lists to find relevant literature for my PhD!” - Johanna Kluit, MSc Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies graduate [2022] Career support from the University of Glasgow As a postgraduate student at the University of Glasgow you will have access to our Careers, Employability and Opportunity service. This service offers students the opportunity to network through organised events, help with finding employment, internships and work experience, and career development masterclasses.
